Check the file timestamp, Info and XMP
The word “modified” can describe the file’s filesystem timestamp, the PDF Info dictionary’s ModDate, or XMP modification metadata. Deleting a value in one place does not establish that it is absent elsewhere.
Finder still manages a modification timestamp for the file on disk. A PDF viewer may show an embedded property instead. Start with the application where you see the unwanted date and determine which kind of date it is reporting.
Use a metadata cleanup workflow for removal
Adobe documents metadata inspection through Acrobat’s document properties and Additional Metadata views. Acrobat Pro also provides sanitization tools for hidden information. Use a duplicate, review the cleanup options, remove the intended metadata, and save a new copy.
Sanitization can remove more than dates, including other hidden information. Check the selected categories and inspect the final file. Follow Adobe’s guidance linked below for the controls available in your version.
After saving, verify the standard Info and XMP dates rather than relying on one display. A save operation may generate fresh metadata. Review the saved document’s forms, attachments and other features if you used a broader cleanup operation.
If you want a different date, use a date editor
- Close the PDF and add it to WordDate.
- Enable Set dates separately and select the required Modified value.
- Check the Created date and the proposed Finder and PDF values.
- Review optional additional date properties, choose Save a copy and click Apply dates.
- Re-add the output to confirm the date values you selected.
WordDate writes standard Info and XMP date fields and verifies them before saving. It adds missing standard fields where needed, so it is not a tool for leaving those fields blank. Its PDF workflow preserves page content and interactive features.
What metadata removal does not establish
An absent modified field does not establish that a PDF has never been changed. Cloud history, previous copies, embedded objects and visible page content are separate from standard document-level dates.
For privacy cleanup, review the full set of information you intend to share. For a timestamp correction, replace the relevant date values and verify the finished copy. These are different outcomes and need different tools.
Common questions
Does WordDate delete PDF date metadata?
No. It writes replacement created and modified values, including supported Info and XMP fields. Missing standard date fields are added.
Why does Finder still show Modified after sanitizing?
Finder reads a filesystem timestamp. Removing embedded PDF metadata does not remove that timestamp from the file on disk.
