First decide which date you want to remove

A Word file has document properties stored inside it and timestamps managed by the filesystem. Removing embedded metadata does not give the file a blank Modified field in Finder. Your Mac still manages timestamps for the saved file.

Removing a property also does not remove a date written in the document, comments, tracked changes or version history stored by a cloud service. Decide whether your goal is to correct a date value or review information before sharing.

Inspect metadata in Word

In supported Windows desktop versions, Microsoft provides Document Inspector. Work on a duplicate, open File → Info → Check for Issues → Inspect Document, review document properties and personal information, then remove only the categories you intend to clear. Save and inspect the output again.

Microsoft says Word for Mac has no Document Inspector. File → Properties provides manual access to some properties, but is not a general command to delete standard date fields. See Microsoft’s inspection guidance linked below for platform details.

These tools inspect broader metadata. Do not assume that removing personal information guarantees an absent Last Saved date after another save; check the actual saved file.

If you need to replace the date instead

  1. Close the source document and add it to WordDate.
  2. Enable Set dates separately and choose Modified / Last Saved.
  3. Review Created, Last Printed and any optional custom date properties in After applying.
  4. Save a copy, then re-add the output to confirm the new dates.

This is useful when a file has an incorrect timestamp and you want a specific replacement. It leaves date properties present. Choosing the same created and modified value does not establish that the document has never been edited.

Verify the copy you plan to share

Check both the file’s Finder information and its embedded properties. Review comments and tracked changes separately if those are part of your sharing task. Keep the original until you have confirmed the copy contains what you expect.

A recipient’s copy, download or cloud sync may receive different filesystem dates. No local metadata change controls all future timestamps or changes an existing cloud service’s version history.

Common questions

Can I make Finder’s Modified field empty?

Removing document metadata does not remove the filesystem’s modification timestamp. Finder dates and embedded Word properties are separate.

Will setting Modified equal to Created hide all changes?

No. Matching date values do not establish that a file is unedited, and do not remove comments, tracked changes or cloud history.
